EXPLORTAMBOS is a primitive camp in Explorama´s deep virgin
rainforest reserve of the Napo River, a two-hour walk from our nearest
lodge, ExplorNapo. The new Tambos have a maximum capacity for 16
explorers who share this experience, sleeping in individual shelters
with mosquito netted beds (shelters for couples are also available),
eating meals cooked on an open-hearth fireplace and using the Tambos as
the departing point for newly opened trails.
Due to the Tambo's isolation, the possibilities of spotting wildlife are
much better than from any other lodge in this part of the Amazon. In the
short time that the area has been visited by biologists, zoologists and
our guides, many different species of primates - red titi monkeys,
yellow handed titi monkeys, tamarins, squirrel monkeys, monk sakis,
pygmy marmosets and howler monkeys have been observed. In addition to
primates, they have also confirmed the presence of ocelots, tayras,
arboreal anteaters, and other mammals. The ExplorTambo basic program
includes nights at Explorama Lodge and ExplorNapo as well as the Tambos.
On this adventure you will have excellent opportunities to discover the
unique animals and birds of the Amazon as well as to enjoy the wide
variety of plants and insect life.
Day 1 : IQUITOS – EXPLORAMA LODGE
Reception at the airport, brief city orientation and transfer to the
Explorama dock. Fifty mile journey down the Amazon River to Yanamono
Stream where Explorama Lodge is located. Afternoon hike along the "Lake
Trail"
through lowland rainforest which is seasonally flooded. During the high
water season, this excursion is done by open boat! After dinner, there
is a chance to visit the Lodge's "Bar Tahuampa" where local musicians
often play guitar and flute music or guides will also be pleased to have
you invite them to relate some of the many legends of the Amazon forest.

Day 2 : EXPLORAMA LODGE – EXPLORNAPO LODGE
After breakfast, a boat rides down the Amazon and up the Napo River to
the ExplorNapo Reserve and ExplorNapo Lodge. Afternoon visit to the
ReNuPeRu Ethnobotanical Garden located next to ExplorNapo and tended by
a local shaman. This garden is used to show visitors rainforest plants
used in modern medicine as well as examples of native plant remedies
which science may utilize in the future. Evening excursion by open boat
along the Sucusari Stream in search of caiman and to enjoy the night
sounds and stars of the Southern sky. Overnight ExplorNapo at Lodge. (B,L,D)
Day 3 : EXPLORNAPO LODGE – EXPLORTAMBOS CAMP
Morning hike to the Canopy Walkway, a suspended bridge spanning 500 meters (one-third
of a mile), connected by tree platforms and reaching a height of over 35
meters (115 feet) above the ground. Here you observe a "bird's eye view" of
part of the rainforest rarely seen by man but accessible without any type of
climbing skill or equipment. Afternoon hike to the secluded Tambo clearing
where small sleeping shelters offer an intense overnight camping experience
in the rainforest. A night walk provides the possibility of seeing animals
rarely seen during the day. Overnight at ExplorTambos Logde. (B, L, D)
Day 4 : EXPLORTAMBOS CAMP– EXPLORAMA LODGE
Morning return to ExplorNapo for a boating excursion along one of the
Napo tributaries spotting for sloth, birding and fishing for piranha.
Also a chance to visit some of the local river people called "ribereños"
whose houses are seen along the river. Afternoon boat trip back to
Explorama Lodge passing the town of Francisco de Orellana, where a
statue is erected to the intrepid explorer who became the first European
to see the Amazon River in 1542. Overnight at Explorama Lodge. (B, L, D)
Day 5 : EXPLORAMA LODGE - IQUITOS
Morning hike along the "Bushmaster Trail" where scientific studies by
the Missouri Botanical Gardens found one of the world's highest
biodiversity of trees per square hectare. Your guide will point out many
examples of native plants used as remedies by local people. Afternoon
return to Iquitos and transfer to the airport for your departure flight.

Our tour to
the islands on Lake Titicaca was a
wonderful day. We had great weather and the people that we met
were very friendly. The island of Taguile was a beautiful little
paradise. The hotel in Puno was very good, with a great
breakfast. It is too bad we could only stay one night. We kept
the room for the second night so that we could freshen up before
going on the bus to Cusco Peru.

We had a very nice trip to Peru.
Thanks for you help. Our hotels in Peru
were what we expected, very nice and the hotel help went out of
their way to make sure we were comfortable and had what we needed.
Our guides were outstanding. Always on time and catered to our
needs. Our groups were small except for the Sacred Valley tour where
we had 25 members. Food was plentiful and tasty at each restaurant.
The Hotel Casa Andina in Cusco gave us an upgrade when we returned
from MP which was very nice. Also, the Radisson gave us an upgrade
when we returned to Lima although we stayed only 6 hours.
Again, thanks for your services. I feel very fortunate that I
selected your travel services, because of the services. Several on
the trip thought I was mighty brave to select an unknown agency. I
was impressed with Ivan during our first emails and phone
conversations. I trusted him and he trusted me, this makes for happy

I just returned back to the US from my trip to Peru. I wanted to let
you know how grateful I am for the wonderful experience that you
help me coordinate and plan. I loved all of the sites and felt I had
a unique experience that I will never forget.
The tour planners and the tour
guides were all wonderful and extremely helpful. Each of them were
very polite and knowledgable about their subjects and locations. I
learned alot about Peru and its customs.
The hotel on Machu Picchu (Sanctuary Lodge) and the hotel in Puno
(The Libertador) were excellent and I would recommend anyone to stay
in each of those locations. The San Augustin El Dorado was just
adequate; I found the hotel to be clean and the staff helpful, but
there is too much noise during the evening and mornings; this is
because many of the rooms overlook the central lobby of the hotel
and the acoustics create echos of sound from the front desk and
those people having conversations in the lobby area. Also, the space
heaters in each of the El Dorado rooms I stayed in did not work at
all. I do not think I would recommend the hotel to people unless
they didn't mind a noisy atmosphere.
The Posada del Inca hotel in Bolivia was very nice; I really liked
the rustic feel and intimate setting and the private gardens--the
views of Lake Titicaca and the mountains were spectacular. Although
I didn't realize it would be a hike (literally) up to it. One of the
couples I was travelling with on the first day in Bolivia had
trouble making it up the hillside (they didn't know they would have
to hike to the top to get to the hotel). I would recommend letting
potential guests know that it is a 40 - 45 minute hike from the dock
to the hotel itself. The guides were very helpful and it was good
that our luggage was carried up separately.
The trip was amazing and I just wanted to thank you for all of your
planning. I would recommend you and your staff to everyone I know
who wanted to plan a trip to go to Peru.
